We are a medical facility and we do require medical certifications for THC product purchases.
This question has several answers, but we'll do our best to help you understand the important points.
On November 2nd, 1999, Maine legalized medical marijuana. This meant that individuals with a valid medical marijuana license could legally purchase products containing THC at a tax rate of 5.5%. Additionally, edible products containing THC could be purchased at a tax rate of 8%.
As of October 9th, 2020, Maine officially opened its Recreational / Adult-Use market. This means that individuals 21+ can visit a licensed adult-use facility and legally purchase marijuana products without a medical marijuana license.
The biggest differences between these two entities comes down to taxation, products available and licensure required.
In terms of taxation, medical marijuana and medical edibles are still taxed at 5.5% and 8%, respectively. In the Recreational / Adult-Use market, taxation on marijuana products is higher (10% or more depending on the municipality).
The products available in the adult-use market also vary from those sold at medical facilities. This difference mostly applies to the potency allowed per package of edibles. Adult-Use facilities are required to cap edible potencies at 100mg per package. Significantly higher potencies are available at medical facilities.
Lastly, individuals who hold a medical license can shop at medical and adult-use facilities. Individuals who do not hold a medical license can only shop at an adult-use facility.
If you are a Maine State Resident, we offer medical card certifications for $40. Applicants can either visit our storefront to pick up an application or visit our Resources page for a downloadable PDF version. It is highly recommended that you obtain a medical card and shop at a medical facility. This is because sales tax on medical marijuana is 5.5% and at least 10% on recreational marijuana.
In order to obtain a medical card through Maple Valley Pharms, we require all individuals to fill out a very brief, two-page application. We will ask to see a valid Maine State ID at the time of submission. This information is faxed to our certifying physician, who will call you for a quick consult 24-48 hours after your application has been submitted. The certifying physician will be calling from a blocked / unlisted number. Once approved, your card will be dropped off at our storefront, and we will call you as soon as we receive it.
Medical card holders have access to a much wider range of products than are currently available on the recreational market. Medical card holders also have access to higher potency products.
Additionally, medical marijuana is taxed less than recreational marijuana (5.5% sales tax vs. 10% sales tax, respectively).
Yes, you can buy CBD products without a medical card.
Every patient that shops with us in-store is asked to enroll in our MVP Loyalty Program, which credits 10% of every purchase to your account. This credit can be used during your next in-store visit or during a following transaction as a discount.
For example, if your total at checkout is $100, then $10 is automatically credited to your account and becomes available during the next transaction. You can either use this credit immediately or save it, and allow your credit to build with every purchase - there is no limit. Additionally, your credit will remain on your account as long as you hold a valid medical card. If your medical card expires, you do not lose your credit, but you will need to obtain a new medical card in order access and apply it to a purchase.
Because we want to make shopping with us as convenient as possible, we accept cash and debit cards as payment.
We are able to process debit card transactions because our card readers operate as cashless ATMs.
Typically, ATMs stipulate that you must withdraw money from your bank account in $5, $10 or even $20 increments. When you run a debit card in our store or when paying for delivery using a debit card, money is pulled out of your bank account in increments of $10. This means that, if your total is $38, we must charge your debit card for $40. If you are shopping in-store, we will give you the change for this difference (we would return the $2 you were overcharged).
If you are paying for a delivery, we must run your card the same way, but are unable to provide change for the difference because our drivers are not authorized to carry change. Additionally, please be aware that our cashless ATM processor charges a $3 ATM fee that some banks will return to the account holder.
If you would rather pay for your delivery with cash, our drivers are authorized to collect this form of payment, but are still unable to provide change.
No, we cannot accept credit cards. This is because marijuana is still a federally regulated substance, and most credit providers are federally regulated.
